Tiarne Katona is a photographer and stylist. I was lucky enough to interview Tiarne about her work and what she is currently up to.

Hello! Thank you so much for letting me interview you. How are you?

I'm very well thanks! Thank you for having me!

Tell us a little bit about your background.

I am a Stylist and Photographer with a Communication Design background. These days I do a little bit of everything but my work is primarily styling based.

Describe your style in three words.

Colourful. Quirky. Bright.

I adore your work. What inspired you to start taking photographs?

Thank you! My big inspiration is food and colour! I've got a ridiculous collection of cookbooks on my shelf and that was my main inspiration when I first started taking photos.

How has your creative process changed since the start?

I think the main difference has been within my post production methods. As I've learnt more over the years I've been able to work a lot faster and it's opened up different methods of processing images.

What equipment do you use for your work?

I shoot with a Canon 5D Mark III and a couple of good lenses. Because I shoot primarily with natural light I own minimal lighting equipment.

What equipment would you recommend for someone who wants to get into photography?

Any sort of entry level camera and a tripod is perfect for anyone who is starting to learn! I use Adobe Lightroom to edit and sort my photographs, learning to use this program was a great asset when I started.

Why has social media been an important platform for you to use?

Instagram in particular has been amazing for making new contacts and reaching out to other creatives. It's been a great platform to share portfolio work as well, kind of like LinkedIn but for creatives. I also find it's a great tool for searching tags and researching locations.

Who inspires your work?

So many people! A few of my Instagram favourites at the moment are:

I also gain a lot of inspiration from Japanese packaging design!

Why is photography important to you?

I've always been such a visual learner and I think photography is the perfect way for me to share my experiences and flat lays of silly purchases, amongst other fun things.

What makes a good photograph?

It's definitely a good mix of things to consider. Lighting can make an immense difference in how a photo will turn out and depending on what is being shot, the styling is equally as important!

What are you currently working on?

At the moment I'm planning another trip to Japan to take lots of lovely food photos! A few collaborations with friends are in the making as well. I recently shot some work for a book by Duplicate Studio that will be making its debut at the NGV Art Book Fair on March 16-18 in Melbourne! You can take a look at the studio here ''.

What's your typical working day?

I am currently working full time as a Styling Assistant with Amazon in Melbourne. I balance that with freelance jobs so each week/weekend is different!

What's the best piece of creative advice you've ever been given?

My favourite quote of creative advice is from a promotional card that my uni handed out on an open day and I always come back to it. "If the creative process isn't difficult then there's no point in doing it - you should tear something out of your soul when you're creative, which pushes you forward as a person. Easy work you learn nothing from." - Jonathan Barnbrook.
