House Of Dreams

After having made two previous attempts to reserve my space to see the house, I finally made it on Saturday 27th October.

This wonderfully authentic house really is something to behold as you delve into the life of artist Stephen Wright. When moving between rooms it is as though you are flicking through the pages of a diary. You are embraced with colour, written accounts on the wall, mosaic masterpieces and intricately tessellated objects that compose the entirety of the wall’s surface.

Visiting someone’s home is always an intimate event, one that evokes a sense of ‘nosiness’ as you peer into the lives of its owner. This idea is exemplified within the very walls of the House of Dreams.

It is an experiential event where you feel the presence of the art through its magnitude of detail, symbolism and sheer aesthetics. You are surrounded in a house of ‘things,’ all containing their own history, mark and reason for being there- whether that be sentimental or simply aesthetic.

I do not want to ruin the mystery of the house itself, as it is something you simply have to experience, but it is interesting to look at it as someone’s home (Stephen does live there) and not a gallery. To me the house was a living embodiment of the progression of time and lived experience. Life is unpredictable, ever changing and timeless in the same way that this house is always being worked on and added to in whatever way they are inspired to next. It is also a visual mark left behind, beyond the artist, like the used rollers and toys on the walls- the straying hairs or scratches are the reminisces of its history left behind.

I urge anyone interested to take part in this new way of experiencing art, as well as just witnessing for yourself the sheer enjoyment that this house brings to its visitors.
