Interview: Georgia Phelps Beauty
Georgia is a self-taught, online makeup artist, who is also busy working as an account manager for Benefit Cosmetics. We discuss the necessary craft and skill needed to fit into this competitive industry as a beauty blogger.
Hello Georgia, thank you for chatting with me. How are you?
You’re most welcome! I’m very well thank you.
Tell us a little bit about your background?
I’m a 23-year-old blogger and make-up artist from Bristol. I like to say I’m almost like an account manager by day and blogger by night!
When did you realise you had a passion/skill for makeup?
I was asked to do a family member’s makeup for her wedding about 5 years ago and although I was super nervous as I hadn’t done another person’s makeup before, I absolutely loved it! The rest has been history.
What made you want to become a blogger?
I first created my blog when my dad passed away 3 and a half years ago. I needed a distraction from everything and I knew that because I studied English and Photography, it could potentially be a good thing for me. I never expected it to turn into such a big part of my life though, let alone my career!
How would you define your style?
I’m a very chatty, laid back writer. A lot of people say that when they read my posts it’s like I’m having a little chat with them and I love that! I’m not a fan of scripted posts that sound like a robot personally but know that for some people it’s a style that really works. I chat a lot in person and I guess that reflects on my blog too!
What are the most important tools for you when creating a look?
Decent brushes are an absolute must have! I use so many bright colours that need seamless blending and if my brushes aren’t up to scratch, my work won’t be either. I also need really good lighting! I’ve recently got a full studio lighting set up in my house and it’s an absolute dream to work in.
What has been your favourite look?
That’s such a hard question! I love so many of them for different reasons but recently i’ve loved this bright, tropical island themed look. I also can’t forget this metallic lip that I created a few weeks back! Not my usual style but it went down so well on Instagram that I think I should create more looks like it.
What are your top 5 favourite makeup brands?
I use so many brands on a daily basis so this is another tricky question! I can’t put them in order but i love:
NYX Professional Makeup
What hurdles do you face as an online MUA?
The competition is absolutely massive! It’s a very over-saturated market and some of the people within this industry are absolutely incredible at what they do - I can only strive to be as great one day!
Where do you find your inspiration when needed?
Literally everywhere! I’ve created looks inspired by so many things over the years - even things like food! This look for example, was inspired by Jaffa Cakes because who doesn’t love one of those?! I think when you’ve got a creative mind, you can come up with a look based on absolutely anything. I would be lying if I said that I don’t sometimes struggle to think of ideas but I guess it’s like that with any creative task.
Do you think you will ever quit your day job and peruse blogging as your full-time job?
The day that I become a Mother will probably be the day that I take that plunge. It’s a huge struggle blogging consistently whilst working full time and my days off from work are always spent on my blog whether it’s writing, taking photos, editing or on a shoot myself. It’s like working 2 jobs and I definitely underestimated how much time it would take up when I started blogging! For now, I’m busy building up relationships with brands, collaborating and grafting away ready for the day that I take on blogging full time.
The quality of your photos are stunning - what equipment do you use when taking them?
Thank you so much! For most shots I use the Canon 4000D DSLR with a 15-88mm lens but sometimes use my iPhone 8 when I’m out and about.
Finally, what can we hope to see from Georgia Phelps Beauty in the future?
My next plan is to organise some masterclasses! I’ve been looking into hiring out some studio space to hold ticketed masterclasses/lessons. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a little while so I’m hoping to take that step soon.
I’m also beginning to create some new and exciting content for my Instagram recently. Working with local photographers and mixing up my style a little bit - so far so good! It’s been so well received on my social media.
