Interview: Primrose's Kitchen

Primrose’s Kitchen make 100% natural raw vegetable muesli and superfood blends right from the heart of Dorset. I was lucky enough to interview Primrose about her muesli and business.

Hello! Thank you so much for letting me interview you. How are you? 

I’m good thank you.

I adore your business. What made you decide to set up your own business? 

I had a youth of ill health, with IBS, chronic fatigue and ME. Breakfast was my favourite meal of the day but I didn’t feel it was as nutritious as it could be and I wanted a gluten free and organic option.

I got a real thrill from making tonics and jams for the local farmers market in Guernsey from wild foraged ingredients and creating pretty labels and finding people buying them. I don’t think I thought about it then as starting a business but rather exploring something I enjoyed doing.

What did you call your business Primose's Kitchen? 

I was going to call it The Naturopath but I got challenged by Natures Path so I decided I would use my name as it was unique and personal and I am glad I did as it tells a personal story.

How has your creative process changed since the start? 

I think all my processes have changed since the start as I have changed personally and the business has evolved as I have. Slowly down and not being in such a rush is the greatest change I would say.

How did you manage to learn and hone your craft? 

Trial and error. Lots of mistakes and failures led to solutions eventually bit I am still honing!

Have you always been into baking and cooking? 

No actually everyone thinks I must be a great cook and enjoy cooking. What I love is using the freshest ingredients straight from my garden and doing very little to them as I believe great ingredients speak for themselves and that is the ethos at PK. I never bake but tend towards very simple dishes if I cook and outside of that I much prefer being cooked for!

What equipment do you use for your work? 

We have a big tumbler like a cement mixer that mixers the ingredients together. We have a walk in dryer for dehydrating the fresh fruit and vegetables for optimum nutrition. We have a vertical form filling machine that puts the muesli into the bags and those are the main ones.

What tools or materials could you not live without? 

Oats and coconut oil and almonds are my top three I don’t think I could live without.

Why has social media been an important platform for you to use? 

It has been as important for us as I think any business in that it is the place huge swathes of the population spend there time now and in recent years “tribes” and “communities” have popped up and grown into something very supportive online for small brands. If they find something that resonates with them that they believe in they want to be a voice for it. 

Who inspires your work? 

I am inspired by nature.

Do you have any favourite recipes that you adore at the moment? 

I never get tired of banana and sweet potato ice cream with peanut butter on top.

What do we hope to see in this up and coming year for your Instagram page and your work? 

We are going to be doing a lot more work on an environmental level promoting organic, promoting more sustainable packaging and drawing attention to the larger issues globally that we all need to play a role in solving.

What are you currently working on? 

I am working on a snack product!

What has been your favourite cereal to make? 

The beetroot is my favourite as it’s such a rich pink colour, I think it tastes great and its totally unique.

How do you go about making your cereal? 

Fresh vegetables arrive from UK growers which we shred and combine with our organic gluten free oats, coconut oil and nectar and slowly air dry this for 8 hours before mixing with seeds and nuts.

What’s your typical working day? 

I wake at 5.30 and do stretches. In the summer go for a walk or swim. I drive to work which is about half an hour away and deal with the daily goings on of managing a business whilst exploring new ideas.

Do you have any exciting plans for this year? 

I am going to Costa Rica to the jungle for Christmas and New Year and learning the tarot!

What is your career plan with your business? 

To continue to learn. That is the only goal. I have learn’t that life has its own plan for you so the best thing you can do is not to get in the way.

What’s been the biggest struggle in getting your business off the ground? 

Cashflow for any business. That has been the hardest juggle, whilst finding the right people for advice on how to do certain things.

Do you have any advice for anyone starting their own business? 

Ask as many people as you can who have done something similar before for their opinions and help. I didn’t and I definitely have learn’t the hard way on a lot of things. 

What's the best piece of creative advice you've ever been given? 

It is not just limited to creative but “Trust your gut” is the truest advice.
