Maria Perry set up Glitta Glo during university. Her business sells sunglasses, which are perfect for a party or festival. I was lucky enough to interview Maria about her business and career plans.

Hello! Thank you so much for letting me interview you. How are you?

Great, excited to share with you a little about my company!

Tell us a little bit about your background.

I've recently graduated from Bristol University studying History of Art. I set up my sunglasses business, Glitta Glo, in my first year at University - so its been my baby throughout my time there!

I adore your business. What made you decide to set up Glitta Glo?

I was looking for a pair of sunglasses - It was Christmas and I was going to the beach and really struggled to find a pair of cool sunglasses. So I found an old pair of mine that were battered and boring and decided to put some gems around them, jazz them up a bit, and that was the original product.

What does your shop sell?

Glitta Glo sells fun and fresh party or festival sunglasses, perfect for allowing an expression of unique style. Its all about having fun with your look! We have 5 lines now of differing colours, shapes and sizes.

Why did you call your shop Glitta Glo?

Glitta Glo came to me when I was thinking of the designs - the gems are what make the glasses unique - its glitter that glows!! I wanted to have fun with the name - something that would match the idea behind the glasses.

How has your creative process changed since the start?

I have evolved taking note of the market and listening to my customer base and their needs. Its important to understand what the customers want!

Why has social media been an important platform for you to use?

Social media has been crucial to Glitta Glo and marketing. The business is mainly online so the Instagram and Facebook page are important for me to use to show followers the Glitta Glo lifestyle!

Do you have any favourite pieces from your shop that you adore at the moment?

The new Rave Shades are a personal favourite of mine - I'd wanted some thin rectangular shades for a while - people have loved them for festivals this summer so far. A classic pair I love to put on though are the Gold Sweethearts - I wear them as an everyday pair and always get so many compliments!

What do we hope to see in this up and coming year for your Instagram page?

This year there will be lots more content - working with more student fashion shows and some more lines coming out. The Instagram page over the summer is particularly vibrant with all the Glitta Glo models rocking their glasses around the globe.

What advice would you give to people looking to define their own style?

Go with what you like, style is so personal, and it should be! Fashion should be about enjoying what you wear and that is what Glitta Glo stands for. You should be able to play with what you wear without worrying about what is in or out at that time.

Do you have any advice for anyone starting their own shop?

I would say go for it! The quicker the better in my opinion, don’t give yourself time to overthink, otherwise there will be 100 reasons not to. However, I would also say it’s important to know when to ask for help. I found speaking to other entrepreneurs has helped me, even if it’s something as simple as using Instagram in a different way that can really revolutionise a brand.

What’s next for Glitta Glo?

This year I am starting a Masters in Business during which I will continue to develop Glitta Glo - there are some exciting projects in the pipeline which will all be documented on the Glitta Glo Instagram over the summer, so be sure to give it a follow to keep up to date!
