Meet The Maker: Chlomyst Designs

Chloé Simpson is a painter and illustrator with a love for nature. I was lucky enough to interview Chlomyst Designs about their shop and work.

Hello! Thank you so much for letting me interview you. How are you?

I’m great thank you.

I adore your business. What made you decide to set up Chlomyst Designs?

I've always loved art and design. I studied fine art in college. After many years being away from art, I had a sudden urge a couple of years ago to start drawing and painting again. I did doodles and rough sketches, which turned into larger watercolours and paintings. I created my Instagram account and started posting my artwork. I set up my Etsy shop this year!

What does your shop sell?

My shop sells mainly A4 and A3 watercolours, plus fine pen animal sketches.

Why did you call your shop Chlomyst Designs?

I needed to come up with an original name that nobody was using. I used both my first name and middle name. This is how Chlomyst Designs was born.

Have you always been into illustration and art?

I have since I was little. I used to always doodle in my sketchbook, mainly animals and give them names - almost creating fictional characters. I've always had a vivid imagination. I loved art at school and college. I studied contemporary textiles at university. The course was unique.

What equipment do you use for your work?

I use mainly watercolours, inks and fine pens. At the moment I'm using oils and acrylics.

Why has social media been an important platform for you to use?

I think it's been amazing at showing people what you can do. It gives artists a platform to showcase who you are and what your work is about. It is also great for networking and meeting new people.

Who inspires your shop?

Nature artists and designers.

Do you have any favourite items from your shop that you adore at the moment?

I love my floral watercolours. I also love my fineliner pen sketch of a whale! He's my favourite.

What do we hope to see in this up and coming year for your Instagram page?

Definitely new artwork and designs! I would like my artwork to be showcased in shops. Exciting things are happening soon!

What’s your typical working day?

Interior designer by day. Artist by night and on weekends!

What’s been the biggest struggle in getting your business off the ground?

I think Etsy is very competitive. You’re competing with thousands of the same type of people who are doing similar things to you. It's trying to stand out, which is the hardest part!

Do you have any exciting plans for this year?

I think it's mainly getting my artwork seen and doing more art fairs. Last year's Etsy Made Swindon was such a very big success. I loved doing it.

Do you have any advice for anyone starting their own shop?

Yes, don't expect to sell straight away! Keep persevering and don't give up. It’s a tough industry but keep going!

You can find their designs on ‘’ and Instagram ‘’.
